For those of you with children with seizures, what do you do for childcare? I was wondering if you felt comfortable sending them to daycare or if you hire a nanny.

I think that as long as you pick the right daycare provider it would be good for your kids to be with other kids.  I know my friend sends her son to daycare.  The provider has all kinds of medical training.  Of course you would have to be sure that the daycare is ok with having a child there that has seizures.

The few times I have known of parents that needed special care for their kids, all went ahead and hired a sitter who was also familiar with what their kid needed (most I know went the registered nurse route but that can be pricey sometimes too).

If you can ask a friend or a family member to watch over your kid then I guess that would be nice. These people will likely know the condition of your child and they will know (I hope) what to do when a seizure will occur.

You can also hire someone to watch over your child as long as that person is knowledgeable on handling seizures.

If no one can watch over your child in a day care then make sure that the teacher knows the medical procedures when your child will have an episode.

Family members currently watch our children for this reason and though we pay them I hate to use them as much as we do. I feel like we can’t get away for time together because we already exhaust our family members during the week.

The friend or a family member route is a good one to take but just make sure that the person is comfy with the job to start with. I remember my Aunt telling me that she was not comfy until she had throughly read up on epilepsy.

I agree that before we let our friends or family watch over our children, make sure that they are comfortable with what they will do. I think they know already why you need to ask them to watch over your child but you should know if they are really up to it.

My son’s day care provider was familiar with taking care of an epileptic child.  He goes there now after school and stays until I can pick him up after work. They are comfortable with taking care of epileptic children and I have no worries that they would know exactly what to do.

In my town, there is a daycare referral agency. They keep track of all the daycare providers in the area and what their specialties are. That way you can find a provider that knows how to properly deal with epileptic children.
