Hadid Wins Beijing Skyscraper Competition
 
Zaha Hadid has won an international competition for the development of a new skyscraper in the Chinese capital of Beijing beating off some heavy competition from two leading finalists.

The 200 metre plus Wangjing Business Area Project had solicited a number of entries, most notably from the Massimiliano Fukas Studio which looked like three stacks of paper on a mound piles of paper although this wasn’t enough to get the attention of the judges despite its unique look.

Rejecting blocky they went for the organic Hadid design. Standing on a shared podium with landscaping, it features something perhaps similar to a couple of shark fins gliding under the ground that are shaped to curve in opposition to the bend in the motorway that sweeps past the site.

Relating still further to the nearby road, they also step up in height towards the back of the site where the taller building with its sinuous curves is leans subtly away.

It might not be the tallest building ever planned for Beijing, but locally at least, Wangjing is known as the “sleeping city”, a title that has referred to its lack of steroid-like high-rise development compared to other parts of the Chinese capital.

The winning entry from Zaha Hadid’s practise may just go some way towards finally elevating the neighbourhood beyond the commieblocks that currently define so much of it, and act as a pull for other developers eager to cluster their own projects nearby.
