I am not sure about foods that contain iron other than green leafy vegetables but I do remember my doctor telling me that iron is best absorbed when taken with vitamin c. So if you have to take the supplements take them with a glass of orange juice.
If you’re not pregnant, you can eat animal sources like chicken liver, beef liver, pork liver, mussels, clams and oysters since they are rich in iron. Other good vegetable sources are pumpkin seeds, molasses, breakfast cereals and lentils/cooked beans.
Broccoli is a decent source as well as spinach, kale and collards. I love to cook spinach up with a little bit of garlic and olive oil. It shrinks and so a lot seems like just a little. It’s delicious, too.
I’ve been anemic since I was pregnant with my daughter. There are a lot of foods with iron that you can eat. There is also an iron supplement that you can take. I have been taking it for years now. Let me just tell you that if you get put on the OTC iron pill, be sure to drink plenty of water and eat foods high in fiber. The iron pills are very constipating?
When I have an anorexic stretch then I get anemic very easily. The doctor told me all kinds of foods (especially red meats) which have iron, most have been told here. One simple thing you can do is to start cooking with cast iron skillets. I know it seems weird but the doctor told me to and I did and in a week of just doing that I got up my result from 10.2 to 11.8 so it does help.
The doctor put me on a supplement that I crush up and put in my tube feeding. So far it’s been working and I don’t feel as tired. I am almost finished with my chemo so I’m hoping to be able to get back on solid food soon.
Look for a good food guide that shows you what is in everything you eat. You will find a bunch of green, leafy vegetables have iron. Another thing you can do is to cook everything in cast iron. That will also add some iron to your diet.
Some blood tests I had recently said that my iron level is pretty low and that I am anemic. Are there any foods that I can eat to increase my iron and iron absorption level? I have taken supplements in the past and they just don’t sit well with me.
