I’m not sure there are enough kids with the same problems in our schools. We are from a small town, so I bet there would not be.
I bet in some city schools this would work though.
That idea could provide great emotional and social help for kids with medical problems. The school authorities should be the one to organize it, and should include those with all kinds of medical problems, not just PKU.
While it is true that in a small town there probably wouldn’t be enough kids with the same exact issue, I bet there’s still a handful with some sort of medical condition that interferes with their life in one way or the other that could benefit from some peer to peer help so a general club revolving around that might work out as someone else pointed out.
It also could just be about having problems in general as often some non-medical issues can be just as stressful if not more severe at times.
Personally I live in a small town, so that would not be possible for schools around here. Maybe a community program would be best for the smaller areas. I think that schools with enough children should make an effort to form support groups like this if they have enough children that relate to that group.
I think it is a great idea but you would have to broaden it to make it work. Like children with dietary issues not just one for kids with PKU. You would have to come up with a good name for it to so it didn’t lead to the kids getting picked on.
This is a really great idea guys talk about thinking outside the box. I think most schools would probably be pretty receptive to the idea as well.
I don’t have kids so I can’t really speak from direct experience but I remember back in high school we as students could start clubs and I remember there being some health related ones, if you have kids with some medical conditions such as the one discussed in this forum you should persuade them to start a club related to it to help out other kids with it. There will also be less embarrassment involved as other kids might have the same or an even “worse” condition so I doubt there will be unease. Some elementary schools might permit such activities as well so you should tell your kids to find out.
Hope this helps the parents out there.
