The last plane I was on I was able to bring my own food, but since trying to book a vacation trip I was told this is no longer an option. I never liked AL food to start with (before I found out about my diabetes) and now its even worse since it seems eating cardboard would taste better than a diabetic AL meal. :(
If you don’t like to eat the food on airlines, I suggest that you make a very heavy meal before your flight. At least, you have some reserve when you don’t feel like eating the food in the plane. Airline foods are for commercial purposes and they don’t really prioritize the nutritive value of the food.
Right now my baby is only 6 months old so I don’t have to explain the difference in diet. It is a pain though to get the doctor to write a letter and to send the letter to the airline, etc, etc. Eventually it’s going to come down to packing his own meal though. I don’t anticipate flying with him a lot though.
I haven’t seen a airplane meal yet that was fit for PKU or a low-protein diet.
I like the advice to eat a good meal prior to getting on the plane, or plan to eat something when you get off. I’m sure there will be snacks that you can eat.
We can ask the airline to provide a special food for us but I’m sure that they will ask for a additional fee. If it’s a short flight then I guess we can travel without eating inside the plane. But if it’s a long flight then we should make sure that we eat something on the plane whether it is prepared by the airline or snacks brought by us.
Unfortunately, I have not heard of any airline that actually meets such requirements of PKU patients. I believe that this is quite hard for the airline to organize and they usually advise you simply bring your own food onto the plane.
I know that airlines try to accommodate special diets on long flights but will airlines accommodate a PKU diet or allow you to bring your own food?
